After Myth

4 Nov

I’m really into these new tracks, the powerful concept & the work behind them. I’m also loving Freddy D. on the cover – the style of which echoes David Bowie’s “Heroes“. Thought I’d share Teo Blake’s debut album, “Death to Sambo”:

11 May

Yes, I’ve been posting lots more music videos and crazy twitching .gif pictures, but it’s hard to resist when MIA has a new single out! The song is called  ‘xxxo’  and is from her upcoming album, / \ / \ / \ Y / \, as in, Maya. Recently pushed back from June 29th to July 13th, it’s a different new sound she’s putting out, I’m interested to see/hear more.

Goodnight, Lena

10 May

The lovely & unforgettable Lena Horne passed last night, 92-years-old, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. I was interested to learn recently that Lena Horne was born to an upper-middle class family in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn (Each side of her family belonged to what W. E. B. Du Bois called “The Talented Tenth“) & that she was blacklisted from working in Hollywood during the “red scare” because of her progressive political beliefs.

My most memorable Lena Horne moment to follow:

Double Take

6 May

Two new videos released this week that illicit totally different emotional reactions: Sade’s “Baby Father” & Beyonce’s “Why Don’t You Love Me?”. Each of the videos feature the ladies as sexy housewives, one in a whimsical neighborhood, and one in a campy parody of 1960’s domesticity. Both fantastic.

You Don’t Know THE DUCHESS

20 Apr

“The Duchess”, born Norma-Jean Wofford, played with Bo Diddley and his band from 1962-1966. An acclaimed guitarist (with her iconic ‘Cadillac’ and ‘Jupiter Thunderbird’ Gretsch guitars), brought some style to the group amid audience requests for a female player after Peggy “Lady Bo” Jones left the scene. Norma & Bo pretended to be siblings in the public eye long before Jack & Meg White covered their first blues song.

Can’t not love that beehive & those glitter leggings.

Visit Spectropop for more on The Duchess.

A Bare Beginning

28 Mar

At 3am this morning Erykah Badu released her video for “Window Seat”, the first single from her new album, Return of the Ankh. The full album is out this Tuesday & I’m psyched. Love love love the video:

According to Questlove on Twitter, the full video, filmed in Dallas, was shot in a single take.
